Jakarta, February 23, 2022 – Discussions on tackling climate change and global trends in the energy sector and energy transition become one of the main challenges. Accordingly, Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Nicke Widyawati, and Chair of the Energy, Sustainability, and Climate (ESC) B20 Task Force, invites global companies that are members of the B20 to identify three main challenges that have a major impact on the energy sector toward climate change.
“We have identified three main challenges. The first is the slow transition. Second, the potential for disturbances in the transition period has not been managed properly. And third, energy insecurity is a barrier to achieve development and energy transition," Nicke said in the first call meeting of ESC B20 Task Force, held online on Tuesday, February 22, 2022.
According to Nicke, based on these challenges, three things must be done immediately. First, accelerate the transition to sustainable energy use. Second, ensure that risks are predictable, and third, carry out global cooperation to improve energy security.
"We must act immediately with what was considered at this year's B20 meeting, which was very innovative, inclusive, and collaborative," Nicke said.
She urged all members of the B20 forum, especially those involved in the Energy, Sustainability, and Climate Task Force, to take part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“Most of the climate change problems are caused by greenhouse gas emissions, and it has become a global problem. Thus, we must use our capacity to make changes, innovations that are inclusive enough to get everyone's attention and implement them together, and collaborate to suppress climate change," said Nicke.
Moreover, Nicke hopes that through this meeting, Task Force B20 will not only provide policy recommendations to the G20 but can also be followed up and have a broad impact on the community.
“Since the first meeting, we have been working to develop policy recommendations. Hopefully, it can continue to develop until it becomes an effective result. This is our opportunity as part of the B20 to express our views and innovative ideas aimed at tackling climate change, strengthening energy sustainability, and carrying out the energy transition,” said Nicke.
The meeting was attended by 150 participants consisting of Deputy Chair of ESC Task Force, Agung Wicaksono, Manager of ESC Policy Task Force, Oky Muraza, 8 Co-Chairs of ESC B20 Task Force, and B20 members from 19 industries and 25 countries. The next Call Meeting agenda will take place in March 2022.
Nicke appreciates the enthusiasm of the task force team in providing input, as well as good and wise ideas from different perspectives based on the expertise and experience of each participant, which will strengthen the recommendations of B20 in the Presidency of Government 20 (G20).
"The recommendations that will be submitted will encourage inclusiveness, resilience, and innovation in the fields of Energy, Sustainability, and Climate," she stated.**
