Pertamina-Siemens Energy Ready to Realize Sustainable Energy Transition

Jakarta, August 14, 2024 – PT Pertamina (Persero) is collaborating with Siemens Energy to realize sustainable, safe, and affordable energy in Indonesia. This synergy was marked by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, in Jakarta, which focused on exploring business opportunities and potential collaborations for accelerating technology.

The MoU was signed by the Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and Business Development of Pertamina, Salyadi Saputra, and the Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Siemens Energy Asia Pacific, Thorbjörn Fors.

Salyadi explained that this collaboration is a commitment by both companies to sustainability, innovation, and energy advancement.

"Through the MoU between Pertamina and Siemens Energy, we take a proactive and visionary leadership step in energy. This collaboration is more than just a strategic alliance; it is a fusion of expertise, resources, and collective efforts to address the energy trilemma and ensure energy that is safe, sustainable, and affordable—not just for today but for future generations as well," said Salyadi during the signing.

Salyadi expressed that this collaboration reflects the partnership between energy and technology companies to generate technology and innovation. It also creates added value for stakeholders, communities, and the environment. "We will leverage new renewable resources potential as part of the energy transition steps while also driving economic growth," Salyadi explained.

Similarly, Siemens Energy stated that Pertamina and Siemens Energy share the same vision of becoming sustainable companies and driving the energy transition in Indonesia.

"Indonesia has the potential to lead energy transition, and our partnership with Pertamina is the foundation for building a sustainable future for Indonesia. Siemens Energy is not just a technology provider; we are partners in shaping a new energy landscape rooted in tradition and progress," said Thorbjörn.

Andilo Harahap, Managing Director of Siemens Energy Indonesia, added that this collaboration is the beginning of a shared vision. We strive to optimize and use higher technology to produce energy efficiently while maintaining environmental protection by reducing emissions.

The MoU outlines three main programs to be implemented. First, Power-to-X is an innovative technology for creating new ways of producing and storing renewable energy.

Second, wastewater heat energy utilization in upstream operations. In this program, the heat from process wastewater can be reused, resulting in energy efficiency and sustainability.

The SVP of Research & Technology Innovation of Pertamina, Oki Muraza, added that the energy utilization program is a significant leap. By utilizing advanced heat recovery technology from Siemens Energy, Pertamina can enhance upstream operational efficiency while reducing its carbon footprint. "This is an example of a circular economy in the energy sector," Oki explained.

Third, the Marine Sector Decarbonization will be beneficial for monitoring and managing carbon emissions in the maritime industry. "This is also an important program because the maritime industry is a crucial component of global trade and faces challenges in reducing emissions," added Salyadi Saputra.

The Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that Pertamina is collaborating with various business partners, as well as government institutions and academics, to develop the potential for sustainable energy and decarbonization efforts. This collaboration is believed to support Pertamina's role in maintaining national energy security while achieving the Indonesian Government's Net Zero Emission target.

"Initiatives in energy and sustainability are crucial as Indonesia strives to fulfill international environmental standards and contribute to global efforts in combating climate change," added Fadjar.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
