AIPF 2023: Pertamina Showcases Green Infrastructure for Lumut Balai Geothermal Power Plant Unit 2

Jakarta, September 5, 2023 - PT Pertamina (Persero) actively participated in the flagship event of the ASEAN Indo-Pacific Forum (AIPF) 2023 by showcasing the Lumut Balai Geothermal Power Plant Unit 2 project as one of the green infrastructure initiatives based on environmentally friendly energy. 

During the opening ceremony, the Booth Green Infrastructure of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) featuring the Lumut Balai Geothermal Power Plant Unit 2 development project was visited by the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, along with several ASEAN Heads of State attending the AIPF 2023.

At that moment, Julfi Hadi, the CEO of Pertamina Geothermal Energy, explained that the Lumut Balai Unit 2 Geothermal Power Plant project, located in Desa Penindaian, Kabupaten Muara Enim, South Sumatra Province, has an installed capacity of 55 Mega Watts (MW) and is expected to be operational by 2024.

"This geothermal power plant would supply electricity to 55,000 households in South Sumatra. The Lumut Balai Unit 2 geothermal development project is an expansion of Lumut Balai Unit 1, which also has a capacity of 55 MW," Julfi explained.

This green infrastructure development project is a collaboration between Indonesia, Japan, and China. It is aconcrete evidence that Pertamina, supported by the Indonesian government, is actively fostering collaboration with Indo-Pacific nations. 

"The collaboration on this project is carried out in partnership with Mitsubishi Corporation from Japan, SEPCO III Electric Power Construction Co., Ltd. from China, and PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk from Indonesia," Julfi stated.

Furthermore, Julfi elaborated that PGE, with its extensive experience in developing geothermal energy in Indonesia, currently has an installed capacity of 670 MW and aims to increase it to 1 GW.

"This project is part of the national strategic projects aimed at supporting the 1 GW target to be achieved within the next two years," Julfi emphasized. 

Additionally, this project is one of the energy transition initiatives aimed at helping the government achieve the Net Zero Emission target by 2060.

"The goal of this project is to mitigate climate change risks and support Indonesia in achieving a 23% share of renewable energy in the national electricity grid by 2025, which has the potential to reduce emissions by 581,784 tCO2eq per year," Julfi added.
