JAKARTA - Pertamina Group forms partnerships with several global companies from Japan to achieve the government’s Net Zero Emission 2060 target. The signing of the agreements strengthens previous collaborations, including those on energy transition, geothermal power generation, CO2 injection CCUS-EOR, and bioenergy production using CCS technology.

At the AZEC Ministerial Meeting 2024, Pertamina Strengthens Cooperation with Japanese Companies

Jakarta, August 21, 2024 - At the 2nd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting 2024, PT Pertamina (Persero) and its subsidiaries renewed their partnerships with global companies from Japan, including Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI), Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), MARUBENI, Japan Petroleum Exploration Company Limited (JAPEX), and Toyota Tsusho Indonesia. These collaborations aim to achieve the target of the Indonesian government in realizing Net Zero Emission (NZE) by 2060.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, conveyed that AZEC is a forum for government institutions, industry leaders, and experts, playing a crucial role in renewable energy and sustainable practices across all sectors globally. "This AZEC forum focuses on sustainable development and promoting the NZE agenda. I appreciate all partners and stakeholders who have made this initiative possible. The decisions and expertise we share are invaluable as we embark on this journey together," Airlangga said.

In agreement, the Minister of Investment of Indonesia, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, added that the strategic partnership between Indonesia and Japan is one of the key foundations for driving a low-carbon business ecosystem in Indonesia, aligning with Indonesia's NZE target by 2060.

The signing of this cooperation strengthens previous agreements in various fields, including potential collaboration in the energy transition era, trade insurance and credit facilities, geothermal power generation, methane emission measurement and qualification at Donggi Matindok and JOB Tomori fields, CO2 injection CCUS-EOR at Sukowati field (phase 2), and bioenergy production by implementing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology in South Sumatra.

Present at the signing ceremony were Emma Sri Martini (Finance Director of Pertamina), A. Salyadi Saputra (Director of Strategy, Portfolio, & Business Development (SPPU) of Pertamina), Takeda Sachiko (JICA), Kazuki Hondo (NEXI), Wataru Ikushima (MARUBENI), Tomomi Yamada (JAPEX), and Hiroyuki Mori (JOGMEC). Additionally, several Pertamina management members and its subsidiaries, including Oki Muraza (Senior Vice President of Technology Innovation), Chalid Said Salim (President Director of Pertamina Hulu Energi), Julfi Hadi (President Director of Pertamina Geothermal Energy), Muhamad Arifin (Director of Region 4 of Pertamina EP), Andry (General Manager of JOB Pertamina Medco E&P Tomori Sulawesi), and Zulfikar Akbar (GM Zone 11 Pertamina EP), were also in attendance.

At the 2nd AZEC Ministerial Meeting 2024, which involved international energy company leaders, Emma Sri Martini (Finance Director of Pertamina) stated that Pertamina is fully committed to supporting the government in achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or sooner. Collaboration with international companies from Japan is to accelerate the achievement of this target.

“We share the same goal of reducing carbon emissions by exploring potential and opportunities for cooperation to produce green and carbon-free energy,” said Emma Sri Martini during the signing ceremony. The signing between Pertamina and all the Japanese companies took place at Grha Pertamina on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. It was officially announced to the public at the 2nd AZEC Ministerial Meeting 2024 today, Wednesday (8/21).

Emma added that the partnership with Japanese companies represents Pertamina's concrete step in leading the energy transition in Indonesia. Pertamina has undertaken various energy transition initiatives, including geothermal energy enhancement, green energy development, hydrogen commercialization, biorefinery development, carbon capture and storage technology implementation, and electric vehicle battery ecosystem development.

“Pertamina will collaborate with national and global companies to support decarbonization and energy transition in Indonesia while simultaneously creating new, more sustainable businesses,” she concluded.

VP of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that Pertamina's synergy with various Japanese companies demonstrates a commitment to accelerating the achievement of the Indonesian government NZE target. "Pertamina has various green energy and decarbonization programs. With this collaboration, the aspirations for green energy and decarbonization development will progress more quickly and effectively to reach the NZE target," Fadjar added.
