Tokyo, December 18, 2023 – PT PERTAMINA (Persero) - the Indonesian Energy Company and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) proudly announce a collaboration agreement aimed at advancing collaboration on methane emission measurement and quantification at natural gas production facilities in Indonesia.
Based on this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), both parties will work closely to formulate a project for methane emission measurement and to calculate carbon intensity (CI) from upstream operations to establish the methane emission management system. The initial implementation will be at PERTAMINA's upstream areas, which are Donggi Matindok and Joint Operating Body Tomori (JOB Tomori) in Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia.
This strategic collaboration, formalized during the ASEAN – Japan Economic Co-Creation Forum following discussion at ASEAN Methane Leadership Program which is joined by both parties, signifies the commitment of both entities to address the pressing issue of methane emissions in the energy sector. The MOU was signed by A. Salyadi Saputra, Director of Strategic, Portfolio, and New Venture at PERTAMINA, and Asawa Satoshi, Executive Vice President of the Energy Business Unit at JOGMEC.
Salyadi expressed that Methane emission is critical to be addressed considering its prevalence in the oil and gas operation, with 28x global warming potential compared to CO2. “We need to accurately measure and quantify methane emission to advance our methane emission management. In PERTAMINA we have a strong ambition to be able to align ourselves with global methane management practices, and to arrive at that point, we need support including from JOGMEC”.
In response, EVP of the Energy Business Unit at JOGMEC, Asawa Satoshi, welcomed the collaboration opportunity by stating that " Last year, JOGMEC strengthened its carbon neutral initiative and started supporting the clean energy project to Japan. It is expected the produced energy resource from these fields, which comes to Japan is to be assessed to make it cleaner through this joint study with PERTAMINA. We are very pleased at the addition of this new project that will contribute to CN.” stated Asawa.
The signing of the MOU during the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Leaders meeting underscores the commitment of both parties to implement this collaboration. The AZEC Leaders meeting held on December 18, 2023, facilitated further discussions on cooperation within the AZEC platform among the Prime Ministers of AZEC partner countries. Preceding this, the ASEAN-Japan Economic Co-Creation Forum on December 16, 2023, focused on developing and accelerating tangible cooperation on co-creation projects in AZEC and future business possibilities, including decarbonization and energy transition.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.
