Jakarta, April 26, 2024 - PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), a subholding of Integrated Marine Logistics PT Pertamina (Persero), shows its commitment to promoting decarbonization in the maritime industry sector while manifesting PIS's passion for preserving the Earth for future generations.
Corporate Secretary of PIS, Muh. Aryomekka Firdaus stated that PIS continues to enhance its decarbonization efforts in business operations and other supporting activities. "These efforts have proven successful, with PIS's decarbonization data showing significant progress each year," Aryomekka said.
In 2023, PIS successfully recorded a reduction in carbon emissions by 25,445 tons equivalent to CO2 (CO2e). This figure surpassed the 54% target reduction in PIS emissions, around 11,659 tons equivalent to CO2.
"The carbon emissions in 2023 have significantly reduced compared to the realization in 2022, which stood at 6,866 tons equivalent to CO2, an increase of up to 270%," Aryomekka added.
This success, said Aryo, was carried out by nine main steps divided into three categories, namely, efforts to reduce CO2 emissions with Greenhouse Gases (GHG) or preventing the greenhouse effect, Non-Greenhouse Gases for non-carbon emissions, and reducing emissions through preserving the ecosystem or Nature and Ecosystem-Based Solutions (NEBS).
Efforts to prevent greenhouse gas effects or GHGs include the utilization of biofuel for PIS ships, where 50% of operated ships already utilize Bio Fuel, operating dual-fuel technology ships such as Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGC) which are more environmentally friendly, installing energy-saving devices on ships, installing solar panels, operational efficiency, and other efforts that comply with Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) certifications.
Meanwhile, for non-GHG efforts, steps taken include installing ballast water treatment systems on over 70% of PIS ships to prevent the transfer and spread of invasive aquatic species to destination waters and installing scrubbers to filter ship exhaust gases.
"Another environmental action is that PIS has planted 6,523 mangrove trees, not only in operational areas and PIS terminals but also in other areas as part of the BerSEAnergi for the Sea Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL)," he said.
Coinciding with Earth Day in April, PIS continues encouraging its fleet to adopt new technologies and environmentally friendly operations that can reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. Additionally, the company actively renovates its fleet, ensuring that new tankers comply with global regulations while preserving the environment.
Vice President of Corporate Communication at PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, added that various decarbonization initiatives within the Pertamina Group are tangible manifestations of Pertamina's support for the government's target of achieving net-zero emissions (NZE) by 2060. "Throughout 2023, Pertamina Group's decarbonization achievements reached 124% or exceeded the set target. These efforts are carried out through two pillars: decarbonizing emissions from business activities and building green businesses that produce clean and environmentally friendly energy," he explained.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
