Pertamina Discovers New Gas Resources in Sulawesi to Support Sustainable Energy Transition

Central Sulawesi, October 4, 2024 – PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, as Pertamina's Upstream Sub-holding, continues its efforts to find oil and gas resources to support national energy security. Through PT Pertamina EP Cepu, PHE has discovered potential oil and gas resources in the Tedong (TDG)-001 well located in Mamosalato District, North Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi.

It was announced by the Director of Exploration of PHE, Muharram Jaya Panguriseng, during a field review at the Tedong (TDG)-001 well site on Friday (04/10). Present at the event were the Deputy President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Wiko Migantoro, CEO of PT Pertamina EP Cepu, Muhamad Arifin, CEO of PT Pertamina Drilling Services Indonesia, Avep Disasmita, VP of Regional Exploration 4 Dedi Yusmen, and General Manager of Zone 13, Andry Sehang.

The Tedong (TDG)-001 well drilling is part of a series of exploratory efforts in frontier areas, as well as the economic development of Eastern Indonesia. Previous exploration efforts have been carried out in the East Wolai (EWO)-001, West Wolai (WWO)-001, and Julang Emas (JLE)-001 wells. This exploration drilling aims to confirm oil and gas resource potential in the limestone formations of Minahaki and Tomori.

The vertically drilled well has a depth of 2,448 meters MD. After conducting flow tests on the reservoir layers, it was found to have a 163-meter hydrocarbon column with a rate of 15 million cubic feet per day (mmscfd) and 185 barrels of condensate per day (bcpd).

Muharram explained that this discovery is expected to increase energy supply for at least the next 15-20 years to supportthe region’s industrial needs, and it is estimated to be comparable to Donggi in the future. "This aligns with our exploration strategy, which is becoming more aggressive, especially in the eastern regions of Indonesia, which still hold promising potential and will significantly contribute to national and regional energy security, particularly in Sulawesi," said Muharram.

On the same occasion, the Deputy President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), Wiko Migantoro, stated that Pertamina prioritizes domestic exploration activities, allocating a USD 390 million investment in 2024, including the Tedong discovery, which could position Sulawesi as a domestic gas industry cluster similar to East Kalimantan.

"We are proud of the Upstream Sub-holding’s achievements, which has pioneered a new domestic gas cluster development in Sulawesi, continuously proving its commitment to increasing the availability of clean energy throughout the country," concluded Wiko.

Pertamina also secured three new exploration blocks in 2023, with more expected this year. In Sulawesi, Pertamina manages gas production of 664 million cubic feet (mmscfd), conducts Exploration Status Determination (PSE) for the Mora-Wolai structure, and is now the promising Tedong discovery for further development.

The Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fadjar Djoko Santoso, revealed that Pertamina will continue its exploration efforts domestically and abroad to strengthen national oil and gas reserves.

"The discovery of this exploration well will support Pertamina's efforts in realizing national energy security," said Fadjar.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
