Jakarta, October 14, 2023 – The global motorsport event, Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2023, held in Mandalika, Lombok, has positively impact West Nusa Tenggara’s tourism.
This was confirmed by several tourism industry players around Lombok. One of them is Ahmad Yani, a Cidomo driver on Gili Trawangan. Ahmad recounted that during the pandemic, the tourism sector in Gili Trawangan and the surrounding areas of Lombok came to a complete standstill. However, when the world-class racing event took place at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit last year, the economy and tourism sector experienced a significant boost.
"During Covid, Gili Trawangan was completely shut down, with only local activities. But when the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2022 happened, it was a significant improvement. We could not even accommodate more tourists because of the overwhelming influx. Our income also increased. Currently, starting two days before the event, tourists have already begun arriving," he said.
Sahrip, a bicycle rental owner in Gili Trawangan, also revealed that foreign tourists usually arrive a few days before the race and stay after the event.
"Typically, tourists come after the MotoGP Mandalika. Some have even booked accommodations in Gili for after the event. When tourists come for MotoGP, they do not immediately return to their home countries; they usually stay around the area for a vacation," he explained.
Austrian tourist John shared similar sentiments. He was interviewed at Lombok International Airport and expressed his excitement to watch the Pertamina Grand Prix Of Indonesia 2023 held in Mandalika. After watching the racing event, he plans to spend a week vacationing in Lombok.
"I am very interested in MotoGP in Indonesia. And I have traveled around to watch this event. After the race, I will tour Lombok for swimming, snorkeling, hiking, and enjoying the surroundings for a holiday," he said.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), hopes that the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2023 will have a multiplier effect on economic growth, including for tourism industry players and local small and medium-sized enterprises.
"We hope its presence will provide opportunities for businesses and MSMEs to penetrate a broader global market," he added.
