Jakarta, September 8, 2023 - Pertamina officially unveiled the first Sustainability Academy and Sustainability Center in Asia for the oil and gas company scale during the Indonesia Sustainability Forum (ISF) at the Park Hyatt Hotel in Jakarta on Thursday (7/9). The launch was carried out by the President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, alongside Rabin Indrajad Hattari, the Secretary of the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises.
Nicke Widyawati, the President Director of Pertamina, stated that the Sustainability Academy and Sustainability Center launch represents Pertamina's commitment to preparing Human Resources (HR) sustainably in anticipating the energy transition era in Indonesia.
"We have just launched the Pertamina Sustainability Academy because one of our greatest challenges is to prepare Human Resources, including the general public, to better understand sustainability programs. Without the involvement of all parties, achieving the NZE 2060 target will be difficult," said Nicke.
Nicke added that Pertamina has taken the initiative by transforming its business and organization, and now it is time for Pertamina to contribute more in preparing talents for the energy transition to achieve NZE 2060.
"We hope that the Pertamina Sustainability Academy can raise awareness that in achieving sustainable energy, we all need to have the same understanding," Nicke added.
According to Nicke, achieving NZE should start with oneself. Every individual in society should be involved. Through the Pertamina Sustainability Academy, Pertamina begins internally by providing its employees with a comprehensive understanding of sustainability.
"We are also starting to collaborate with foreign universities and companies or partners who working with Pertamina. We are opening up opportunities to learn together at the Pertamina Sustainability Academy," Nicke said.
Nicke continued that gradually, the government, ministries, educational institutions, and all elements of society can learn together because this is a collective effort to achieve NZE by 2060. In realizing NZE 2060, Nicke emphasized that Pertamina's primary strategy is building or possessing sustainable energy. Sustainable means that all materials and resources are owned by Indonesia, there must be a supply, and then we can convert them into better energy.
"In recent years, Pertamina has strongly promoted palm oil-based biodiesel programs. Indonesia is one of the largest palm oil producers. Thus, we believe that biodiesel is one of the sustainable energy sources that is very suitable for Indonesia," Nicke conveyed.
Rabin Indrajad Hattari, the Secretary of the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises, stated that the government encourages State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) like Pertamina to develop second and third-generation biofuels.
"A good example here is something that Pertamina has been developing since 2021. Pertamina has developed second-generation biofuels derived from empty fruit bunches. This research was carried out by Pertamina’s Refining and Petrochemical Sub-holding, PT Kilang Pertamina International, and has been successful, with expectations of market availability in 2-3 years," Rabin said.
Rabin further added that Pertamina is also exploring third-generation biofuels that are more advanced using LNG. This is a more advanced concept and will take more time, as it requires further research and development.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
