Jakarta, September 27, 2022 – Pertamina NRE supports PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) efforts to reduce carbon emissions through the PLTS at Gambir Station. KAI inaugurated the PLTS utilization on Monday (26/9).
The inauguration ceremony was held at Gambir Station and attended by the Finance Director of KAI, Salusra Wijaya, with the board of directors, as well as the Project and Operations Director of Pertamina NRE, Norman Ginting. Norman said using PLTS in KAI's working area was a follow-up after the memorandum of understanding signing between the two entities on March 9, 2022, regarding the New and Renewable Energy Development in KAI's Assets.
“SOEs are encouraged to play a major role in decarbonization efforts. Renewable energy utilization, such as KAI's initiation, will contribute to emission reduction. Thus, we are very enthusiastic about this collaboration. We welcome other collaboration opportunities, which encourage the net zero emission target,” Norman said.
Salusra said that the PLTS installation was an energy transition effort carried out by KAI using New Renewable Energy (NRE) to supply electrical energy in various KAI assets.
"The solar panels' implementation at KAI stations and offices is part of KAI's 77th Anniversary events with the theme Bangkit Lebih Cepat, Melayani Lebih Baik. During the anniversary, KAI wants to participate in greening Indonesia through Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) by using NRE to create a better and sustainable business ecosystem," Salusra said.
In addition to Gambir Station, KAI has utilized PLTS in the Jakarta Railway Center building. In total, the capacity of the two PLTS is 80.5 kWp. KAI will gradually increase PLTS capacity and expand PLTS use in its other assets. Another NRE potential that the two entities can collaborate on is hydrogen use as a train fuel.
Pertamina NRE, through its subsidiary, Pertamina Geothermal Energy, is currently conducting a green hydrogen development pilot project in the Ulubelu geothermal area with a target production of 100 kg/day. Pertamina NRE has collaborated on the development and hydrogen use with Pupuk Indonesia in the form of signing a memorandum of understanding on July 28, 2021, which blue and green hydrogen has the potential to become environmentally friendly ammonia raw materials.
As part of SOEs, Pertamina is the government's strategic partner in achieving net zero emissions by 2060. The Ministry of SOEs encourages decarbonization efforts within SOEs. With their contribution to a third of the national economy, SOEs play a major role in emitting carbon emissions nationally. By decarbonizing, SOEs will contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions.
Pertamina NRE and KAI share the same passion in implementing ESG aspects in their business activities. Pertamina NRE is strongly committed to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, especially goal number 13, namely handling climate change.**
