Jakarta, October 19, 2022 - Pertamina Power Indonesia (Pertamina NRE) and Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Incorporated (TEPCO HD) signed a joint study agreement (JSA) on the development of green hydrogen and green ammonia on Tuesday (October 18) at the G20 State-owned Enterprises International Conference in Nusa Dua, Bali.
The signing was carried out by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pertamina NRE, Dannif Danusaputro, and Executive Vice President & Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) of TEPCO, Chikara Kojima, and witnessed by Deputy Minister I of SOE Pahala N. Mansury and Director of Strategy, Portfolio, and New Ventures of Pertamina A. Salyadi Dariah Saputra. Pertamina NRE and TEPCO HD will combine Pertamina's geothermal power generation technology and TEPCO HD's hydrogen production technology to establish optimal operational technology and achieve cost-competitive green hydrogen & green ammonia production and transportation through this Joint Study.
“Hydrogen production is one of Pertamina NRE’s future business areas. We are developing a green hydrogen pilot project in the Ulubelu geothermal area with a production target of 100 kg/day. With the potential that we have, we believe we can be a pioneer hydrogen producer in the region and contribute to carbon emission reductions. We are very excited about our collaboration with TEPCO in this joint study,” said Dannif.
“In our carbon neutrality strategy, TEPCO HD is aiming for net-zero CO2 emissions from energy supply by 2050. As part of this, we are striving to promote the utilization of hydrogen and ammonia. We are pleased to use our technology to contribute to the promotion of energy transitions, such as geothermal power generation and green hydrogen production, which are necessary for Indonesia's carbon neutrality goals. It is very encouraging to proceed with this project together with Pertamina NRE, a leading company in the energy industry in SEA.” said Chikara Kojima.
Indonesia has the second largest geothermal energy potential in the world, reaching 24 GW. Today, Pertamina NRE, through its subsidiary, Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE), has installed and operates geothermal capacity of up to 672 MW from six areas, comprising Sibayak, Ulubelu, Lumut Balai, Kamojang, Karaha, and Lahendong.
Pertamina NRE is a Pertamina sub-holding focusing on clean energy business and is the Indonesian government’s strategic partner in delivering energy transition, as well as achieving net-zero emissions. Pertamina NRE is strongly committed to implementing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives in order to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
TEPCO is the largest electric power company in Japan and has provided people with a comfortable life for many years through its energy supply services. TEPCO is aiming for net-zero CO2 emissions from energy supply in 2050 as a carbon neutrality strategy. Hydrogen is an important factor in this, and TEPCO is working to promote its utilization. Since 2016, TEPCO has been conducting a hydrogen production demonstration project in Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, and has accumulated a considerable amount of experience and technology.
With the support of the Indonesian government, Pertamina NRE and TEPCO HD will actively tackle this project to realize a carbon-neutral world.**
