June 13, 2023 - Indonesia has significant potential and opportunities to become a leader in the battery industry for battery-based electric motor vehicles (KBLBB), and Pertamina is committed to actively contributing to its ecosystem. It was stated by Norman Ginting, Director of Projects and Operations of Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE), during a panel discussion titled "Developing EVS and EV Battery Ecosystem" at the Indonesia Miner 2023 Conference & Exhibition on Tuesday (6/6).
"Pertamina continues to adapt to the energy disruption, and it is essential for Pertamina to focus on clean energy and carbon emission reduction development, including supporting the EV ecosystem development," explained Norman.
In his presentation, Norman explained that Pertamina is building the KBLBB ecosystem through various initiatives and pilot projects that have been and will be implemented, such as the Battery Swapping Stations/Charging Stations and Hydrogen Fuel Stations for Fuel Cell EVs development.
Pertamina, through its sub-holding, Pertamina NRE, which participates in the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), aspires to be involved in the entire battery and KBLBB ecosystem value chain, from upstream to downstream. According to Norman, Pertamina sees Indonesia as a country with the world's largest nickel reserves and a strategic role in the battery industry and the KBLBB ecosystem development to fulfill local and global needs.
Pertamina has an extensive supply and distribution network in Indonesia. It serves as initial capital for the transition in building battery swapping and charging infrastructure, making it easier for electric vehicle users to recharge their vehicles.
Moreover, Pertamina recognizes standardizing battery packs’ importance, especially for two-wheeled electric vehicles, to facilitate battery exchanges. Pertamina acknowledges the numerous regulations issued by the government to accelerate electric vehicles adoption in Indonesia. However, there is still a need for additional regulations/incentives specifically for electric vehicle users to make electric vehicles more appealing to users.
Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, stated that the KBLBB ecosystem development aligns with the commitment to support NZE 2060 by implementing the energy transition roadmap.
"The realization of a good electric vehicle ecosystem will support Indonesia's energy transition program and Indonesia's NZE 2060 target achievement. Through the New & Renewable Energy Subholding, Pertamina is committed to further developing clean energy initiatives in Indonesia, including the new and renewable energy development and decarbonization," expressed Fadjar.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
