Jakarta, June 22, 2023 - Pertamina officially launched nine innovative products that have obtained patents for the crude oil processing into high-value petrochemical products at the Pertamina Research & Innovation Day event at Grha Pertamina Jakarta on Thursday, June 22, 2023.
President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, stated besides the nine innovative products, Pertamina currently holds 49 patents for downstreaming crude oil into petrochemical products, and at the same time, there are more than 200 innovation programs being developed by the Pertamina Research Technology and Innovation Team.
"For Pertamina's business sustainability, crude for chemicals is an utmost importance because over 80 percent of chemicals are still imported. So, our focus today is on how we can process all our product into chemicals to reduce imports. Import substitution is our main tagline," said Nicke Widyawati at the Pertamina Research & Innovation Day event at Grha Pertamina Jakarta on Thursday (6/22).
According to Nicke, Pertamina's innovations are a response to the global challenges faced by energy companies such as Pertamina and other global energy companies.
"The global energy transition certainly requires us to make changes, but on the other hand, we must still maintain energy security while ensuring affordability and building sustainability. These three aspects must go hand in hand," Nicke added.
Therefore, Pertamina must simultaneously maintain national energy resilience amid the frenetic energy transition. Pertamina must also support the country's increasing oil and gas production target to one million barrels per day.
"We will continue to prioritize energy security, but in different ways, which we call green operation and decarbonization, becoming our main programs," Nicke emphasized.
Through various initiatives and innovations, the Pertamina Group has reduced carbon emissions by 31 percent from its total operations, from upstream to downstream, surpassing the national target of 29 percent. With this achievement, Pertamina ranks second globally in ESG (Environmental, Social & Governance) performance.
According to Nicke, Indonesia has been blessed with abundant natural resources and has great potential for new renewable energy. Pertamina has already begun innovating with CPO-based bioenergy products, such as B35.
"With B35 alone in 2022, we reduced carbon emissions by 28 million tons in one year. Additionally, it reduced imports, saving Rp 122 trillion in foreign exchange. The impact is enormous," Nicke explained.
On Indonesia's Independence Day, Pertamina will launch new CPO-based innovative products. Furthermore, in July 2023, Pertamina will launch bioethanol products for gasoline based on sugarcane, cassava, corn, and sorghum.
"We will process all plant-based resources into bioenergy because for Indonesia, energy transition is not just about reducing carbon emissions but, more importantly, realizing national energy resilience, independence, and sovereignty," Nicke concluded.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
