Pertamina Synergizes with Japanese Companies to Accelerate Emission Reduction through CO2 Injection and CCUS Technology

Jakarta, October 14, 2024 – PT Pertamina (Persero) remains committed to the Net Zero Emission target. One of its programs includes CO2 injection using CO2-EOR technology as part of the Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) initiative.

The CCUS technology implementation is expected to support this target achievement by effectively storing CO2 and reducing atmospheric pollution. At the same time, CO2 injection using Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) methods will boost oil extraction rates, contributing to increased Pertamina's oil and gas production.

The President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, stated that Indonesia has great potential in applying CCUS and EOR technologies to reduce emissions and ensure energy security. The CCUS project in the Sukowati Field, Bojonegoro, East Java, serves as an example and accelerates the development of similar technologies in other oil and gas fields across Indonesia.

"The success of this project is expected to be a model for similar future initiatives, creating positive multiplier effects and supporting economic growth," Nicke explained.

Nicke added that this project also opens investment opportunities. "By simultaneously boosting production and potentially storing large amounts of CO2, Indonesia can attract investment in CCUS projects, especially from developed countries like Japan. It will not only increase CO2 storage capacity but also drive innovation in related industries," Nicke emphasized.

Meanwhile, Vice President of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, mentioned that the collaboration with JOGMEC and JAPEX represents the Company's commitment to accelerating CCUS technology implementation in Pertamina's oil and gas fields.

"The strategic collaboration with Japan has been successfully implemented in the Jatibarang Field, Indramayu, and is now continuing in the Sukowati Field, Bojonegoro, East Java. This partnership reflects Pertamina's commitment to decarbonization while enhancing national oil and gas production," said Fadjar.

CO2 injection uses specialized equipment designed for optimal CO2 injection with a volume of 100 tons per day over 25 days. The CO2 injection is carried out at SKW-26 in liquid or gas phases at well pressure levels of 1000–1500 psi.

Fadjar added that this inter-well CO2 injection is the second phase of the trial, following the first-phase injection using the huff-and-puff method at Sukowati Field in late 2023.

"After the second phase of injection, Pertamina will evaluate the increase in oil and gas production, which will lead to the full application of CCUS technology with CO2-EOR at Sukowati Field and extend to other oil and gas fields," Fadjar elaborated.

The CO2 injection activities were conducted directly by the President Director of Pertamina, Nicke Widyawati, along with Deputy Director General of the CCS Project Department, JOGMEC Hiroshi Okabe, General Manager of Asia Carbon Neutral Business Department, JAPEX Kyoko Okamoto, and Yuichiro from the Japanese Embassy. Also present were the Director of Technical and Environmental Oil and Gas of ESDM, Noor Arifin Muhammad, representatives from SKK Migas, and the Acting Regent of Bojonegoro, Adriyanto.

Other attendees included the Director of Portfolio Strategy and Business Development of Pertamina, Salyadi Saputra, President Director of Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), Chalid Said Salim, the Director of Development & Production of PHE, Awang Lazuardi, President Director of PDSI, Avep Disasmita, and the Director of Operations of Elnusa, Endro Hartanto.

In addition to the Sukowati Field in East Java, Fadjar added that Pertamina and its partners are implementing CCS/CCUS technology in various oil and gas fields, including those in Central Sumatra, South Sumatra, Asri Basin, Jatibarang, Gundih, East Kalimantan, and Central Sulawesi.

Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
