PIS Quickly Overcomes the MT Kristin Boat Incident in Lombok

Jakarta, March 27, 2023 - PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) is apologetic and concerned about the MT Kristin ship incident in the western waters of Lombok on Sunday (26/3).

"PIS expresses its deepest condolences for the ship's crew and the families affected by the incident," said Corporate Secretary of PIS, Muh. Aryomekka Firdaus, Monday (27/3).

Aryomekka explained that PIS is focused on the search and safety of the MT Kristin crew and further investigations to thoroughly investigate the incident's cause that occurred on the ship.

The MT Kristin ship is owned by PT Hanlyn Jaya Mandiri, chartered by PIS to transport Pertalite fuel to the Ampenan Integrated Terminal and the Sanggar Fuel Terminal.

"PIS' position, in this case, as a charterer of the ship, where in the lease or charter agreement PIS emphasizes the ship owner to prioritize HSSE aspects in operations related to the crew and the ship's cargo safety," said Aryomekka.

PIS ensures that every ship owner who has a business relationship with PIS is fully responsible for any risks and events that could impact the ship's crew and ship's cargo safety following the agreed terms.

PIS continues to coordinate with all relevant authorities for incident management, starting from the Harbor Masters and Port Authority (KSOP), Basarnas and the SAR Team, Pelindo, POLAIRUD, and other parties.

Together with the joint team coordinated by Basarnas, PIS is intensely coordinating the search for MT Kristin's crew.

MT Kristin was recorded as having 17 crew on board, of which 14 were immediately evacuated last night and are in a safe and secure condition. Based on the latest reports from the joint team, two of the three missing crew members have been found dead.

"Once again, PIS expresses its deepest condolences for the MT Kristin's crew's death and wishes the best for the deceased and the family left behind," he said.

Basarnas will still carry out another search to find one crew member who has not been found in the incident area starting this morning, Monday (27/3), for the next seven days. "Let's pray that the search process can run smoothly and the ship's crew can be found soon."

Cargo Loading

Regarding the condition of the fuel cargo on board the MT Kristin, it is currently observed to be safe, and no oil spills have been found. "Because the fire point came from the front mooring of the ship, it did not directly affect the ship's fuel tank."

After the fire was extinguished at 21.00 Sunday night local time, PIS, with the Pelindo Team and Pertamina Trans Kontinental (PTK), conducted cooling to prevent the fire from returning.

The PIS team has also prepared an oil boom with a total length of 300 meters to anticipate an oil spill. The MT Kristin ship is currently pulling out or towing out from the location to the nearest safe port.

PIS once again ensures a firm commitment, especially to chartered ship owners, to always prioritize HSSE aspects for the crew and cargo security and safety so that similar incidents do not recur.
