Jakarta, October 1, 2022 – Pertamina is strengthening its steps in the energy transition by presenting a flagship product for green energy - Pertamina Renewable Diesel (Pertamina RD) which will soon enter the European market. Pertamina Renewable Diesel's debut in the international scope began with the first shipment of HVO product exports to Singapore from August to October 2022. In addition, Pertamina Group is also exploring cooperation in selling Pertamina RD to the European market.
The penetration effort into the European market is several Pertamina Subholdings' collaboration, namely PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional, PT Pertamina International Shipping, and PT Pertamina Patra Niaga through Pertamina International Marketing & Distribution (PIMD).
Pertamina RD, the newest flagship product of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) biofuel, has been launched and used to support the international event Jakarta E-Prix 2022 on June 4, 2022. This product is an environmentally friendly superior goods processed from BioRefinery Cilacap and Biorefinery Dumai. The Cilacap refinery currently can produce HVO of up to 3000 barrels per day and is targeted to increase to 6000 barrels per day in 2026, while BioRefinery Dumai has a production capacity of up to 1,000 barrels per day.
The HVO produced by PT Pertamina Internasional Refinery has been confirmed for its reliability by obtaining the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), which proofs that this product contributes to reducing carbon emissions so that it deserves to be called a green product. ISCC's sustainable carbon certification was initiated by the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and Fuel Quality Directive (FQD) policies implemented in the European Union.
In addition to HVO, Pertamina's refinery has also been able to produce Bioavtur or Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). These two products developments are one of Pertamina's strategic steps in supporting the national energy transition and responding to green energy demand challenges such as HVO and SAF, which are growing in various countries.
Nicke Widyawati, President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), said that as the largest energy SOE in the country, Pertamina continues to be committed and contribute to supporting the Government's program in accelerating the energy transition, following one of the main focuses of the 2022 G20 Presidency of Indonesia. Indonesia's G20 presidency encourages actions to accelerate the clean energy transition as the key to achieving zero carbon emissions or carbon neutrality by 2060.
"Pertamina is an integrated energy company with a strong commitment to the energy transition to renewable energy following Indonesia's net zero emission target by 2060," said Nicke.
Nicke added that the energy transition must be well planned to ensure energy security and energy accessibility for the entire community is maintained.
According to Nicke, to encourage new & renewable energy growth in the national energy mix, Pertamina has designed a green transition roadmap and developed three main business pillars. Namely, the Low Carbon Solutions Program, New & Renewable Energy Development, and EV Ecosystem Development.
Pertamina, continued Nicke, supports the Nationally Determined Contribution target of reducing emissions by 29% by 2030 and Indonesia's Net Zero Emission vision. It includes internal initiatives and in collaboration between SOEs. In 2010-2021, Pertamina reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) to 7.4 million tons equivalent. It follows efforts to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that cause global warming and climate change, ocean acidification, and biodiversity loss.
At the national level, the Green Refinery program is targeted to support government programs in the 2025 'General National Energy Plan' related to decarbonization and new and renewable energy growth. Meanwhile, at the global level, the HVO biofuel products development is also projected to reduce emissions by 78 thousand tons of CO2/year based on the NDC target in 2030 and Net Zero Emission (NZE) in 2060.
Pertamina is also committed to managing 'Biorefinery' or 'green refineries' development through other refinery units. As it is known, Biorefinery is a Pertamina clean energy project where refinery processing uses raw materials in the form of renewable feedstock such as RBDPO (palm oil) to UCO (cooking oil) to produce fuel that is more environmentally friendly. Clean energy products managed by PT KPI include Green Gasoline at PT KPI Unit Plaju and Cilacap, Green Diesel at PT KPI Unit Dumai, and Green Avtur J2 at PT KPI Unit Cilacap.
"Pertamina will ensure a fair, orderly, and affordable energy transition for Indonesia," said Nicke.**
