Research Results Commercialization, Pertamina Creates USD 14.5 Million Value

Jakarta, June 23, 2023 – Pertamina, through the Research & Technology Innovation (RTI) function, has successfully created up to USD 14.5 million value or approximately IDR 217 billion from commercialized innovative products.

Pertamina has also achieved USD 4.6 million in cost optimization through funding grants from collaborations with both domestic and international partners.

It was revealed at the RTI Collaboration Day event at the Grha Pertamina Ballroom on Thursday, June 22, 2023. RTI Collaboration Day is an event introducing several RTI research outcomes that have successfully developed market-ready products and open opportunities for collaboration and research cooperation towards commercialization.

Nicke Widyawati, President Director of PT Pertamina (Persero), explained that one of the biggest challenges faced by Pertamina in the transition era is balancing Energy Security, Energy Sustainability, and Energy Affordability. These three conditions require green business implementation while maintaining energy resilience and providing affordable energy to the public.

"This certainly poses a challenge, and RTI has fulfilled its function in conducting research and innovation, including various programs to reduce carbon emissions from our internal operations," said Nicke.

According to her, Pertamina is committed to continuous innovation. It is evident from the 49 patents acquisition. Moreover, there are around 200 innovative products being developed to support energy resilience.

"This also follows the government's downstream program. Through this innovation, Pertamina can engage in crude-to-chemical downstream, which is expected to reduce petrochemical products imports and contribute to the national trade balance," added Nicke.

At Pertamina, the RTI function plays a role in innovation, sustainability management, future business development, and new business portfolio creation and value creation.

During the event, Pertamina also launched nine innovative products that have been utilized and marketed by the Pertamina Group, which are:

1. Pertadem, a chemical compound that can break natural emulsions in crude oil, thus separating water from oil. 
2. Pertaflow, designed to lower the pour point temperature of crude oil and oil-based processed products such as residue and fuel.
3. Pertasurf, a specially formulated product that fulfills the utilization requirements as an Aqueous Film Forming Foam concentrate (AFFF) 3% / Oil Spill Dispersant (OSD) / degreaser, using the latest water-based emulsifier technology that is environmentally friendly.
4. PertaEOR, a software product developed by Pertamina utilized to predict Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) implementation and Decision Analysis for implementation in the Upstream Oil and Gas sector.
5. Clirton, a cloud-based seismic data processing software that is user-friendly and interactive, accessible from anywhere and at any time without sophisticated computer usage.
6. P-Muda (Pertamina Multiwell Data Analysis Application), a Python-based application capable to perform dataset preprocessing, dimensionality reduction, data clustering, and 2D/3D visualization. This application can show the correlation between various available wells.
7. Breezon, Pertamina's latest Non-CFC refrigerant made from Propylene gas, which is safe, environmentally friendly, and energy-efficient. This product can be used as a replacement for synthetic refrigerants.
8. Spreeze, a versatile anti-rust lubricant product containing patented special active ingredients, is commonly used to facilitate rusty bolts and nuts release, protect the moisture in electronic equipment, and prevent rust by coating metal surfaces.
9. Pertagamant, a software for processing noise tomography data that can be used to identify permeable zones in reservoirs, and Spatial Auto-Correlation (SPAC) to determine differences in rock lithology in geothermal fields.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), state-owned enterprises, private companies, universities, research institutions, funding agencies, domestic and international partners, as well as regulators were present at the event.

Several speakers who attended the RTI Collaboration Day include Ilham A. Habibie, Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Habibie Center; Dadan Kusdiana, Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources; Taufiqulla, Director of Komatsu Undercarriage Indonesia; Achmad Setiawan, President Director of PT Katalis Sinergi Indonesia; and Chalid Said Salim, the President Director of PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan.
