July 7, 2023 - Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) has successfully increased electricity utilization from green energy, particularly solar energy, within the Pertamina Group by 267 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year's capacity.
Pertamina Group aspires to achieve net zero emissions no later than 2060 for scopes 1 and 2. This target is achieved through two strategic initiatives: decarbonizing its existing businesses and developing new environmentally friendly ventures. Decarbonization includes the conversion of fossil fuel-based electricity utilization to renewable energy. In this initiative, Pertamina NRE plays a role in implementing solar power plant installations in Pertamina Group’s operational and office areas.
"Pertamina NRE is at the forefront of the energy transition within the Pertamina Group. Our main business focus on green energy development significantly contributes to Pertamina's decarbonization efforts, especially in providing electricity from green energy sources," said Dicky Septriadi, Corporate Secretary of Pertamina NRE.
He added that the significant increase in installed capacity by April 2023 is a testament to Pertamina's strong commitment to reducing emissions from its business activities.
By the end of 2021, the internal solar power plants of the Pertamina Group reached 7.8 MWp, and by the end of 2022, the total capacity reached 28.6 MWp, an increase of 267 percent. Meanwhile, the emissions reduction from internal solar power plants at the end of 2022 amounted to 7,316 metric tons of CO2 equivalent. This reduction represents a 38 percent increase compared to the previous year.
Within the Pertamina Group, solar power plants have been installed in more than 20 locations, including upstream oil and gas operations, refineries, fuel terminals, LPG terminals, fuel supply points, offices, and residential areas. A large-scale solar power plant project in Rokan, with a capacity of 26 MWp for Phase 1, has begun construction, with 17 MWp already installed. Furthermore, Pertamina NRE supports decarbonization efforts at Pertamina’s forefront, petrol stations. Currently, rooftop solar power plants have been installed at 332 Pertamina petrol stations with a total capacity of approximately 1.7 MWp.
In addition to decarbonization initiatives, Pertamina NRE plays a strategic role in developing new businesses that contribute to achieving the net zero emissions target by 2060. These include building battery and electric vehicle ecosystems, developing clean hydrogen and carbon businesses. Pertamina NRE is committed to accelerating the energy transition in Indonesia and managing responsible businesses through ESG implementation.
"We focus on accelerating green energy, continuously driving the energy transition, not only for Pertamina but also for Indonesia," concluded Dicky.
Similarly, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President of Corporate Communication of PT Pertamina (Persero), explained that Pertamina has developed strategic initiatives to expand renewable energy utilization to achieve the Net Zero Emission 2060 target. Through the PNRE sub-holding, Pertamina encourages all entities within the Pertamina Group to support this energy transition.
"The Renewable energy projects development, including solar power plants, continues. The utilization within the Pertamina Group demonstrates our commitment to sustainability. Moreover, Pertamina continues to collaborate with various industries, thereby expanding renewable energy development," expressed Fadjar.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
