Jakarta, July 18, 2023 - PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) demonstrates its commitment to energy transition by employing low-emission fuels and biodiesel in its owned and operated vessels.
CEO of PIS, Yoki Firnandi, revealed that the company had developed strategic programs, including efforts to reduce emissions from vessel operations through environmentally friendly fuel utilization.
"PIS has already implemented biodiesel utilization, with 146 vessels in our fleet, both owned and chartered, utilizing biodiesel as their primary engine fuel source, and some even using it as an auxiliary engine fuel," Yoki stated at the EBTKE ConEX 2023 event.
Another notable action taken by PIS is the Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) Amaryllis acquisition this year, wherein Pertamina Gas Amaryllis stands as one of the world's largest gas carriers and the first dual-fuel LPG-powered vessel in Pertamina and Indonesia.
"With the Pertamina Gas Amaryllis acquisition, PIS has the potential to reduce its emissions by 12 thousand tons of CO2 equivalent per year," he explained.
Environmentally friendly fuels and B35 biodiesel utilization on PIS vessels constitute two main initiatives in supporting Indonesia's NZE 2060 (Net Zero Emissions by 2060) vision. The first initiative involves PIS' engagement in new and renewable energy logistics and transportation businesses, with medium and long-term targets. The second initiative focuses on emission reduction from vessel operations and other ongoing business activities.
"The most cost-effective means to reduce carbon in the shipping industry is through operational efficiency improvements, such as continuous hull cleaning, installation of energy-saving devices, and optimizing vessel speed," Yoki continued.
VP of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, explained that Pertamina's efforts to support the NZE 2060 target encompass not only the upstream and downstream oil and gas business sectors but also extend to the midstream or distribution sector, exemplified by PIS' endeavors.
"As a Pertamina sub-holding, PIS remains actively engaged in energy transition efforts and achieving the NZE target. Specifically, PIS' dedication shows that even in the oil and gas logistics and transportation, Pertamina remains focused on building green business," Fadjar expressed.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
