August 29, 2023 - As an innovative step in addressing air pollution issues, particularly in Jakarta, PT Pertamina (Persero) supports the Ministry of Environment and Forestry's (KLHK) efforts in conducting a Micro Weather Modification (MWM) Technology test. One of these tests was carried out by KLHK in collaboration with Pertamina at the Pertamina Headquarters Building, Medan Merdeka Timur Street No. 1 A, Jakarta, on Sunday (27/8).
VP of Corporate Communication of Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, explained that the synergy between Pertamina and KLHK is a joint commitment to realizing a healthy and high-quality life. In this trial, Pertamina provides facilities and equipment for water spraying, including the building's facilities and water spraying equipment.
"The water spray and water mist spraying are conducted from the Pertamina office building’s roof, at a height of around 80 meters, to achieve optimal effects from the air spraying," he said.
In this effort, the trial is conducted using the Water Spray - Nozzle Fire and Mist Generator produced by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). In addition to the water spray and mist generator technology, KLHK also possesses other technologies, such as water cannons and gun sprayers.
"Pertamina supports this spraying activity because aside from having tall buildings, the Pertamina Building is also equipped with spraying facilities commonly used for occupational safety aspects in safeguarding national vital objects," stated Fadjar.
Previously, the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya Bakar, revealed that the results of water spraying tests from tall buildings have proven effective in reducing air pollution in Jakarta. Based on the conducted tests, it has significantly lowered the PM 2.5 pollutant levels around the testing area.
In the conducted trial, the BRIN-produced Mist Generator requires 500 liters of water with a power of 2,000 watts to reduce the PM2.5 concentration from 112 to 52.
"The collaboration between KLHK and Pertamina reflects concrete efforts from various parties to tackle air pollution challenges. The results of this trial will provide an opportunity to obtain accurate data and develop solutions for a clean and healthy environment," added Fadjar.
Pertamina, as a leading company in the energy transition, is committed to supporting the Net Zero Emission 2060 target by continuously promoting programs that directly impact the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) achievement. All these efforts align with Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) implementation across all Pertamina's business lines and operations.**
