Visiting Turtle Conservation, Pertamina Invites ASCOPE Delegates to Release Turtle Hatchlings

Bali, May 31, 2024 – As the host of the ASCOPE 8th Mid-Year Task Force Meeting 2024, Pertamina invited all delegates to the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC), one of Pertamina's programs, particularly under Pertamina Patra Niaga, on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

During this visit, participants learned more about turtles and the conservation programs run by Pertamina in collaboration with TCEC.

"The turtle conservation program at TCEC is part of Pertamina's efforts through the Pertamina Hijau program to preserve biodiversity, including flora and fauna, and to promote sustainable environmental conservation in collaboration with the community. This is one of our Priority Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programs," explained the VP of CSR & SMEPP of PT Pertamina (Persero), Fajriyah Usman.

Fajriyah added that through this collaborative program, 44 species of turtles have been protected, while 9,277 hatchlings have been released into the wild.

"Moreover, TCEC's presence increases awareness among the community and related stakeholders about the conservation of turtles, which are protected animals in Indonesia and globally," Fajriyah said.

Fajriyah hoped that the presence of ASCOPE delegates would help make the Turtle Conservation and Education Center more widely known.

"Through this visit, TCEC can serve as a leading example of how Pertamina contributes to environmental conservation, particularly in protecting endangered animals," Fajriyah said.

Further continuing the activity, the delegates released turtle hatchlings (tukik) at Kelan Beach, allowing them to return to their natural habitat.

"Today's activities were impressive. This is the first time in my life that I have seen turtles up close, and I am especially looking forward to the release of the hatchlings," said Nawa, a delegate from Petronas.

Similarly, Suzi, another delegate from Petronas, expressed her excitement about visiting TCEC, noting that her country does not have a similar program.

"I am delighted to be here. We can see turtles, one of the protected animals in Indonesia and worldwide," Suzi explained.

Meanwhile, Azima was very proud of Pertamina's environmental conservation efforts. "This is something that ASEAN countries should emulate," said Azima from Malaysia.
